Worm Farming with The Super 7s

Gabriel from Environment Centre Hawkes Bay came in on Friday to teach us about worm farming and help set up our very own worm farm (donated by The Hastings City Council).

Did you know that food waste makes up nearly 50% of the waste thrown out by households? At our school we were shocked to see how much kai is being thrown out by students and we have decided to take a stand and do something about it.

We have set up a Kai Swap in our room where students can put food they don't want in and swap for something else, even those who have no food for whatever reason may take food so they have fuel in their bellies for learning.

We are lucky enough to have fruit in schools 3 days a week and one day last week I noticed how many banana skins we were throwing out and thought there must be a better way to deal with that waste.

That's where Gabriel comes in. He has educated us on how to care for our worm farm, and we are lucky enough to have a few class experts who have worm farms at home, and will come back in a few months to see how our little farm is getting on.
